What is Mummification?
Mummification is a somewhat niche subgenre of bondage. It involves completely wrapping the areas of intended cover. While anything from rope, sleeping bags, and even blankets can work, the most popular materials are adhesive tapes. This can look like cling wrap, duct tape, or, on the lighter end, medical-grade tape.
Personal Thoughts on Mummification
To be honest, I do not like adhesive mummification. Throughout my life, I have struggled to effectively apply adhesives. This is not just in bondage, but even in simple tasks like putting up a poster. My preconceived notion is that a long setup and takedown time means there is a lot of time for something to go wrong. This concern is compounded by the added complexity of trapped body heat and a rigid, tight structure that leaves minimal ability to shift.
While these are the realities of adhesive mummification, simply telling people not to do it never works. I can appreciate the associated sensations and aesthetic appeal. With this in mind, I reached out to mummification specialist Randy Tanjaya of RandyMummify from Southeast Asia to share his experiences and thoughts on promoting safety.
Introducing Randy Tanjaya
First, let me introduce myself. My name is Randy Tanjaya, and I was born in 1985. I am the master and owner of RandyMummify.com. I first encountered BDSM photos in middle school, around 12 to 15 years old. At that time, there was no internet, but I already had an interest in mummification by playing ‘mummy’ with leggings. I started doing scenes on other people in 2014.
At that time, BDSM mummification already existed in Europe, America, and Japan. However, due to limited videos for me to learn from, I developed my own methods and techniques. Long story short, I apply my own scene ethics when performing mummy scenes. I would like to share the basic ethics that I have established:
Basic Ethics of Mummification
Terminology Matters: I don't use the word "slave." Everything is a model and a partner. If we consider the model to be a "slave," our actions may become excessive and could harm the model.
Focus on Safety: There should be no lust when doing a scene, especially for beginners. Lust can create a chaotic mindset, focusing solely on personal desires rather than the well-being of the model.
Recognizing Danger Signals: It is crucial to determine danger signals if something happens to the model. This is especially important when the model's mouth is closed, as only signs like head nods can indicate a problem.
Avoid Manipulation: There should be no manipulation or forced scenes. This helps maintain a safe atmosphere during the scene, preventing sudden emotional reactions from the model.
Health Considerations: No scenes should occur if the model has a respiratory disorder, including a mild cold. When the model's mouth is closed, the nose becomes the only airway. Additionally, attention must be paid to the equipment used, especially tools for quickly opening the package.
The Psychological Aspect of Mummification
It must be admitted that the mummy fetish can be a form of sexual and psychological disorder, often linked to past trauma. In my case, I cannot be sure, as I have never consulted an expert. However, I recognize that my trauma stems from being belittled by girls at school, which may have led to a desire to make women submissive and helpless in mummification scenarios.
Why did I choose mummification over Shibari? Mummification leaves almost no marks after the scene and creates a sense of absolute helplessness.
Sharing Experiences: Accidents in Mummification
Have You Ever Had an Accident During Mummification?
I have experienced one incident while collaborating with Cocoa-Soft Japan. Due to a miscommunication, the model, who had been wrapped in five layers, fell. Fortunately, the model did not suffer serious injuries because the thickness and tightness of her body wrapping made her stiff and hard.
Addressing Dehydration and Overheating
Dehydration and overheating are additional factors to consider. When I conduct a scene, I always ensure the room is cool, whether using air conditioning or a fan. The key point is that THE MODEL IS EVERYTHING. Her comfort and safety are paramount.
Takeaways and Other Safety Advice
After gathering Randy's insights, I have some advice of my own to share. Some of this advice comes from internet forums, while other parts are based on my experiences.
Preventing Body Heat Buildup
A major generator of heat is skin-to-skin contact. Heat can be better controlled by using some clothing or material to separate the skin. While this slows heat production, it does not eliminate it. My grandfather, who trained in mountain rescue, once told me that heat is mostly lost from the head and feet. While this was to teach heat retention in a blizzard, the same concept can apply to losing heat as well. By not wrapping one or both of these areas, comfort and potentially longevity can be increased.
The Danger of Lust and Desire
I am grateful to Randy for mentioning the importance of self-discipline. While I understand why such feelings exist, it is crucial for those who experience lust to maintain self-discipline and remain aware of the realities of human body and mental health.
Asphyxiation Danger
It is also vital to heed Randy's advice regarding respiratory conditions. Even minor issues should prevent someone from being mummified. Substances that relax the muscles pose an increased danger in mummification, as they can lead to more dangerous compression of the chest than a sober body would allow.
Unique Method of Check-ins
As previously mentioned, the nature of mummification can make communication incredibly difficult. Not only should the person being mummified have a signal for release, but the person tying needs to actively engage in two-way communication. This means an active exchange occurs, such as asking, "Nod your head if you are okay," and the model nodding in response.
Conclusion
Finally, I must thank Randy for sharing his insights and experiences. I have admired his work for a long time and hold great respect for his expertise.
